Operator-controlled femtocells

In the upcoming Mobile Experts HetNet forecast, we expect bigger numbers for femtocells which are deployed and operated by mobile operators than for "consumer femtocells" which are deployed at random by end users.

In Asia, as an example, Mobile Experts expects more than 50% of femtocells to be controlled by the operators themselves.

  1. Which operators are deploying these femtocells? I thought that a femtocell is a unit deployed by the consumer

  2. I can't reveal which operators due to non-disclosure agreements. However I can say that some of the largest mobile operators in Asia are developing indoor "small cells" which use a collapsed RAN structure.

Mobile Experts defines a "femtocell" as a unit (at any power level) which integrates the nodeB and RNC functionality, using a femto gateway architecture instead. Consumers have been the first target market for these but operators will use them too!
